A Arte Da Conversação
(‘The Art of Conversation’)
Fernando Santos Gallery, Porto (PT)
2015

Commissioned shortly after Diane Giraud’s arrival in Portugal at Fernando Santos Gallery, this site-specific installation transformed a private experiential dinner into a 24-hour participatory ritual. Utilizing painted plastic floor-protection sheets, suspended as ethereal “hubs,” the work invited guests into intimate zones of embodied engagement. Handwritten instructions, applied directly onto the floor with masking tape and felt pen, guided subtle gestures oscillating between invitation and injunction, marked by a characteristic layering and humor.

This inaugural installation articulated key conceptual and material codes central to Giraud’s practice: the strategic deployment of quotidian materials to inscribe relational directives, the foregrounding of participation as both method and medium, and the facilitation of conversation and shared experience as vital mediating processes.
